The central theme of my work circles around the term ‘chaos’ and the way it seen as an analogy to human associative imagination. Romantic Philosophers have described this state of non-knowledge as ‘feeling’, ‘faith’ or ‘myth’ which is why it is often ridiculed as esoteric. Why is there such a need for irony as intellectual safety net, when it comes to talking about the chaos of imagination?
It is said that romantic art is expression of a secret urge towards chaos; that endless force which cannot be described by the rational. Chaos theory however states that both, romantic chaos and rational systems or patterns derive from the same simple starting point.
Through video installation and performance, as well as engraving, screen printing and text I am exploring a dilemma: the impossibility of uniting the desire to strive for the incomprehensible plentiful whole and the compulsion to make sense of even that through logical and rational faculties.
My work adds to an open-ended philosophical quest to understand the essence of us as aesthetic beings. Herewith I find myself in company of artists such as Kelly Nipper (for her very interdisciplinary approach and underlying scientific theme), Joan Jonas (for her experimental video work and theatrical performances), John Baldessari (for his early work that questions the nature of the image) and Yvonne Rainer (for her early performances questioning the rhythm and pattern of every-day motion).
In my latest installations, as seen at Show RCA 2010 and Park.View.Situ at the Café Gallery, London, I have developed the interdisciplinary approach, creating didactic relations between seemingly unrelated pieces. On the one hand the viewer is visually stimulated by the illusion of falling bouncy balls projected onto a haptic mix of flour and washing powder. Its counterpart, the text piece, on the other hand, is much more difficult to engage with. It requires patience and concentration because its clues are not given away easily. Therefore the viewer is thrown into the same dilemma: although trying to find reason within the piece, he finds himself in the demanding and chaotic sphere of associative imagination.
